After a wonderful 2011 and an extraordinary evening on December 12th to celebrate our 2nd Birthday, Kaleidoscope begins the New Year with works of youth, exuberance, passion and vigour. Times may be tough, but music and the Kaleidoscope experience will chase away all worries and imbue you with a fresh perspective, as we bring you another incredible night of magic.
We open the evening with Telemann’s exquisite Oboe Sonata in B flat major performed by Emmet Byrne who will be joined by David Adams on harpsichord and Kaleidoscope co-curator Kate Ellis on continuo. To follow, soprano Fiona Mc Andrew, described by The Sunday Telegraph as “outstanding for vocal colour, agility and panache” and pianist Nolween Collet will sweep you into the arms of Poulenc’s “La Dame de Monte Carlo” followed by a short trip to Broadway with "Song for a New World" by Jason Robert Brown. To finish this first half, we are delighted to welcome Dermot Dunne back to Kaleidoscope. One of Europe’s greatest accordion players and a stunning performer, he is going to play 'Carpathian Suite' by Vladimir Zubitsky composed 1983. In his very own words, “it's a stunning piece which fuses traditional folk elements from the carpathian mountains in the composer's native Ukraine with contemporary music styles. Quite a flashy showpiece-you'll see!!”
Our second half contains just one work and it is one of the greatest and most loved pieces of chamber music ever written.
Mendelssohn’s Octet is a work of staggering and precocious genius, composed when the young artist was just seventeen years old. It is a work which holds a special place in every string players heart. This deep connection and passion never fails to communicate to listeners, who also rarely forget the first time they heard this work or saw it performed live.
Hearing this work may be a new experience for you, or perhaps you will be revisited a deeply cherished and old friend. Either way, you are in for an absolute treat, as some of the country’s finest string players, led by Mia Cooper, join together in this unique and wonderful celebration of music, of joy and of everything Kaleidoscope seeks to represent- passion, excellence, beauty and community, shared and celebrated.
Make the Odessa Club on January 4th the place where you make a heartfelt statement to yourself, your people, your country- that music, creativity and excellence will continue to thrive and flourish regardless and that we at Kaleidoscope will be a part of making that happen.
That’s a New Years Resolution worth keeping!
